X-Men: First Class

I'm not the type of person to review movies, or tell people what they should or shouldn't watch because everyone has different tastes. However I just want to say that X-Men: First Class was AMAZING!

I saw it last night with Greg and I must say I was pleasantly surprised. I think going in to the movie with low expectations might have helped though. I mean after X-3 and Wolverine Origins, who wouldn't have horribly low expectations? Those two movies boiled my X-men loving blood and crushed my X-men loving heart.

Anyways, I digress. This isn't about how bad those movies were but about how awesome this one was!

Firstly, and I know many people will disagree with me, but I loved the fact that the characters who made up the first class in the movie were not the same as in the comics (aka: Marvel Girl, Iceman, Cyclops, etc). In fact, I much preferred to see some of the lesser known X-men being represented because I think Cyclops and Marvel Girl are done to death.

By including lesser known characters I felt it gave a depth to the blockbuster world of Xmen. To me the X-men are a group of many gifted individuals, not just the 5 most popular. I did enjoy the nods to the other more popular X-men though when Xavier used Cerebro for the first time. That was done well. I also LOVED the cameo in the movie, but I'm not going to spoil it for you. You'll just have to see for yourself. It is AWESOME though and made me squee with girlish excitement! (If you couldn't tell by now I'm a HUGE X-men fan. I have been since I was a little girl).

Another thing I loved in this movie was that it wasn't CGed to death. Seeing Beast in his makeup made me SO happy! I'm so tired of every movie being in 3D or CGed. Where is the fun in that? I would much rather see the skill and artistry of putting someone in a costume and makeup to transform them into something new. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not a CG hater, but I think when you can achieve something with makeup, there isn't really a need to CG it instead. (That's why I will never see Avatar, despite everyone and their grandma loving it. Too much CG, and I HATE 3D movies)

The only downside to the movie for me was Mystique. She was so... docile and well... not Mystique. In the comics she is so strong, complicated and smart. In this movie she was like a lamb just following men around and worrying about her looks. That was really disheartening for me, but maybe they did it to try and make Emma Frost look look like a stronger female character?

I don't know.

All I know is I left this movie with a huge grin on my face and a new found excitement for X-men which I haven't had since the 90s tv show.

Has anyone else seen this movie yet? What did you think?
