Greg and I spent the night with his family at some fancy shmancy banquet hall celebration. I wish I could say I had a blast, but these sorts of gatherings aren't really my thing. Greg and I, plus his sister and her boyfriend were the youngest ones at the party by at least 20 years and the combination of noise makers and loud sound systems left me with a massive headache all night long. Oh well. At least I got to spend the night with Greg which is all that matters to me.

I hope you all had a great time last night! What did you get up to?

Hello 2012!

Hi, my name is Emma, and I have a blog called Little Gothic Horrors. I'd like to thank Megan for inviting me to her October Blog party, and I hope she won't mind, but I've brought some friends along with me. I'd like to introduce you all to The Ghastlies. If you're not already familiar with them, The Ghastlies are part of the Halloween range from Alexander Henry Fabrics, and in my opinion, are the perfect guests for any Halloween soiree.

blog lovelymissmegs megan blog party
The Ghastlies

"In Ghastlie Manor on Ghastlie Street, there's a Ghastlie family there to meet. Mathilda Ghastlie with husband too, extend a Ghastlie hand to you. It's a Ghastlie day for a Ghastlie walk, under Ghastlie trees on a Ghastlie block. A Ghastlie time for Ghastlie things, like Ghastlie pets with Ghastlie wings!"

Alexander Henry Fabrics (Link: http://www.ahfabrics.com/collections/category/18-theghastlies)

For anyone familiar with my blog, you'll already know that it's no secret that I adore "The Addams Family". Even my profile picture is of my favourite couple, Morticia and Gomez. I like to think of Little Gothic Horrors as a dwelling place for all things delightfully dark, and for me, nothing is more delightfully dark than "The Addams Family". In recent times, however, another creepy clan, The Ghastlies, has come to my attention, and I have become quite besotted with them.

Along with Jack-o'-Lanterns, nothing symbolizes Halloween quite like a spooky house, and a spooky house needs a spooky family. Ghastlie Manor and its eerie inhabitants fit the bill bewitchingly. The images on these fabrics are not only aesthetically just my cup of tea, but they also manage to create an entire little world of Victorian Gothic houses, graveyards, bats, witches, and vampires as the backdrop for this sinister bunch, and their cat, Sebastian.

So, enjoy mingling with The Ghastlies at Lovely Miss Megs' October Blog party, but beware, I can't guarantee that they'll behave!
__________________________________________________________________________

What a fabulous group of people to bring to the party! Thanks for introducing us Emma. And thank you for letting us know where we can order the fabric. You can bet I'll be buying some!

If you're a fan of all things spooky, gothic, horror or Halloween related be sure to check out Little Gothic Horrors. I love the way Emma writes and her blog fulfills my wish that every day could be Halloween.

These are such great ideas Kait! What I love most about them is that once Halloween is over you can easily incorporate these clothes into your wardrobe (compared to the store bought costumes that you wear once and that's it.) What's even more exciting is that I'm being one of the costumes on this list too! What a crazy random happenstance! This year for Halloween I'm dressing as Daria.

Check out more of Kait's super creative and fun blog here! You know you waaaaant to.

Hello Lovely Miss Megʼs readers, this is Stephanie from Someday Smarter. Besides, getting to dress up in a cool costume and having another excuse to eat copious amounts of candy, I look forward to Halloween because it signals to me the return of the Halloween themed episodes!

blog lovelymissmegs megan blog party
Itʼs The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown - How can I not have this on my list? Such a classic cartoon that I look forward to watching every year. Poor Linus, forever waiting for The Great Pumpkin. The boy who waited. :P I know you can now buy it on DVD, but itʼs so not the same as watching it on TV.

blog lovelymissmegs megan blog party
Community - “Epidemiology” (Season 2) - Community has a way with perfectly skewing pop culture references in to a 22 min comedy and this episode is no exception. Thereʼs a outbreak at Greendale due to contaminated meat served at the Halloween party and itʼs up to the gang to not get turned. Great references to zombie movies like Night of the Living Dead and 28 Days Later thereʼs one scene where set to a classic 70ʼs song, they fight off the zombies, much like in Shaun of the Dead.

blog lovelymissmegs megan blog party
Halloween Town - Itʼs a cheesy, but fun film about a girl that discovers sheʼs a witch and sets off to Halloween Town to find out more about it. Itʼs classic early ʼ00 Disney Channel before the Mileyʼs and Selenaʼs that we have now. Plus Debbie Reynolds is in it.

blog lovelymissmegs megan blog party
Are You Afraid of the Dark? - Not exactly Halloween themed, but this was one of those shows that scared the crap out of me, yet I would still watch it. After some episodes, I would go straight to my room and hide underneath the covers. Despite that I still wanted to become a member of The Secret Society.

These are all great recommendations Stephanie! I LOVE that episode of Community! In fact it was the first episode I ever saw, so clearly it got me hooked. I love all your other suggestions too. The Halloweentown series is great!

Be sure to check out more from Stephanie over on her blog. This girl is fantastic because she shares her fashion savvy style mixed with her fun personality. I also love how she's not afraid to let her nerdy side show, and I have her to thank for getting me addicted to Doctor Who! So be sure to hop on over there and say hi!

Hi everyone! Annie here from the blog Wattlebird. I'm so happy Meg is giving me the chance to share one of my greatest fall accomplishments to date! Without further ado, I give you... Apple Pie for Dummies!

This year, my main goal for the fall was to bake an apple pie completely from scratch. I'm not much of a baker, but I was really hoping said pie would at least be edible and taste like, well, a pie. I'm so happy - I met and exceeded that standard!

Clearly, as this was my first pie-making experience, I did not make my own recipe, but I did mesh a few other ones together. I used this one to make the crust, this one for the filling, I made the top crust glaze from this one (only half the amount though).

It took a looooong time, but it was actually really fun and fulfilling. And it tasted realllllly good if I do say so myself. I might start making pies more often, then I hope my life just becomes like an episode of Pushing Daisies (but without the death stuff probably). Who else misses that show??

Thanks again to Meg for allowing me to share my experience as a pie maker! Stop by and visit my blog, if you'd like. I'd love to "meet" you!

Congrats on your pie making success Annie, it looks AMAZING! If you ever open up that Pushing Daisies pie shop let me know and I'll for sure be the first in line. ...I miss that show so much.

Now before you run off to make your own delicious pies, be sure to visit Annie's blog! She's one of my favourite crafty ladies who posts the coolest DIYs, outfit posts and my personal favourite, her pictures of cute animals posts! She sure knows how to brighten your day! :D

On the Menu:

Pumpkin Soup

Ingredients

  • 6 cups chicken stock
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 4 cups pumpkin puree
  • 1 teaspoon chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 cup chopped onion
  • 1/2 teaspoon chopped fresh thyme
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 5 whole black peppercorns

Directions

Heat stock, salt, pumpkin, onion, thyme, garlic, and peppercorns. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to low, and simmer for 30 minutes uncovered.
Puree the soup in small batches (1 cup at a time) using a food processor or blender.
Return to pan, and bring to a boil again. Reduce heat to low, and simmer for another 30 minutes, uncovered. Stir in heavy cream. Pour into soup bowls and garnish with fresh parsley.

Blackberry & Apple Crumble Cake

Ingredients

  • 175g unsalted butter
  • 150g sugar
  • 4 apples, peeled, cored and cut into 8 wedges
  • 3 large eggs , beaten
  • 200g plain flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 150g crème fraîche
  • 150g blackberries
  • 3-4 tbsp clear honey or maple syrup
  • crème fraîche or double cream, to serve

For the Crumble Topping

  • 50g unsalted butter
  • 50g soft brown sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 75g plain flour
  • 50g blanched hazelnuts, toasted and roughly chopped

Directions

Heat the oven to 350 degrees. Butter and line a 20cm springform tin with baking parchment.

To make the crumble topping, melt the butter, then mix in the soft brown sugar, cinnamon, flour and chopped hazelnuts. Heat 25g of butter in a large frying pan. Add 1 tbsp caster sugar and the apple wedges. Cook for about 10 minutes until the apples are tender and golden. Cool.

Beat together the remaining butter and caster sugar until light and fluffy. Gradually mix in the eggs. Using a large metal spoon, fold in the flour and baking powder. Add the crème fraîche and mix until smooth.

Spoon roughly two-thirds of the cake mixture into the tin, spread level and scatter over one-third of the crumble. Top with the remaining cake mixture and level again. Scatter on another third of the crumble and arrange the apple wedges and blackberries on top. Finally top with the remaining crumble.

Bake for about 1 1/2 hours. Loosely cover the top of the cake with a sheet of baking parchment or foil halfway through the cooking time if it is browning too quickly.

Cool the cake in the tin for 10 minutes and then transfer to a serving plate. Warm the honey or maple syrup in a pan and drizzle over the cake. Serve warm with a bowl of crème fraîche or lightly whipped double cream.
